A Decade of Beads (The Urchin Horde Thrillers)

"Slow-burning, character-based crime drama, the star of which is the author’s eloquent and lyrical style." -- Matt McAvoy When the body of a young man washes up on a riverbank in a Chicago suburb, it brings back a flood of memories for passerby Forest Frost – and not good ones. Memories of his arrest and a deal for his testimony a decade ago… However, Forest isn’t as haunted by the murder as racketeer Lizzie Waldron, who just wants to run her crooked courier enterprise and make some money. But she inadvertently employs the men responsible and is now deeply implicated in the investigation – and the man apparently killed for what he knew of her operation is only the first in a growing chain of deaths. As the investigation closes in and the nature of Lizzy’s plan is laid bare, a surprising connection to Forest is revealed… Meanwhile, Lizzy’s own murderous bosses are growing increasingly anxious… and ever more dangerous. A taut, character-led suspense thriller, which slowly simmers with tension… Fans of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" or “Mystic River” will devour this slow-burn, cerebral tale of betrayal, survival and redemption.
