Advanced Russian through history
First published 2026
"Advanced Russian Through History, Second Edition, thoroughly updates the beloved advanced Russian language textbook by reframing Russian history and the approach to teaching Russian history. Arranged chronologically, it begins with Kieven Rus, runs through imperial and Soviet history, and ends at the present day, touching on key moments of historical and cultural importance to understanding modern Russia. The editors have gathered a diverse group of Russophone thinkers and scholars (most of them new to this edition) to contribute fifty short essays on each of these key moments. The essays offer points of view often not represented in presentations of Russian history and are launching points for rich discussions. In addition, each essay is thoroughly glossed for comprehension and is followed by activities that test students' understanding of the subject, expand their knowledge of Russian syntax, and prompt critical thinking. Each essay is also accompanied online by a mini-lecture written and recorded specifically for the book, as well as a rich trove of supplementary, authentic materials.
