The Eklektos and the Antichrist fight for the soul of the world. Minca is an ordinary teenage girl about to start her senior year at Franklin High School in Seattle, WA. She struggles with self-esteem, and at her seventeenth birthday party she blows out her candles wishing to be comfortable in her own skin and to have a boyfriend. All of that She is astral-projected to Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Istanbul on May 29, 1453, during the fall of the Byzantine Empire. She witnesses Turkish soldiers taking parishioners captive, and her ancestor, Father Matthew, a Greek Orthodox priest, disappears into the altar wall with the Holy Communion vessels. Once she returns to the present, Minca learns that her dad is part of a group of priests called the Skopoi, whose job is to watch for the Antichrist. The Skopoi tell her she is the Eklektos (the chosen one in Greek). They explain that Nero (the Antichrist) has been released and needs to open two more portals while increasing war, strife, anger, and division, until the last one, which will release the false prophet.
