History and revelation in the qur'an: the second coming of scripture
First published 2027
"This book advances our understanding of Islam's emergence by examining how the Qur'an situates the Prophet Muhammad and his followers within sacred history. Scholars have often claimed that the Qur'an has a static view of the past as a series of similar cycles of punishment featuring interchangeable prophets and identical revelations. Goudarzi argues instead that the Qur'an's vision of history has a decisive inflection point in the Sinai epiphany. In his reconstruction, the Torah is the first and only comprehensive scripture before the Qur'an, far surpassing other pre-Mosaic and post-Mosaic revelations by offering extensive historical and legal instruction. This unique revelation changes the course of history: it brings ancient cycles of destruction to an end and begins a new era that centres on the Torah's recipients, the ancient Israelites and their Jewish and Christian successors-whose history unfolds under continuing divine engagement rather than total destruction. The Torah's prominence is vital because the Qur'an presents itself as the Torah's full counterpart, the second comprehensive scripture.
