"A school outing on the last day of fifth grade introduces Nico Sarbanes to the local theater. Raised by his deeply negligent aunt, he somehow still cultivates a sense of wonder about the world that is profoundly engaged the instant he sees his first play. As he stands in awe after the final curtain call and the performance of a young actress named Evie, the director of the company invites Nico to attend the Summer Theater Training Institute and arranges for a scholarship. Immersed in classes in everything from improvisation to mime, his natural-almost preternatural-ability is instantly evident to everyone, including his counselor, Grant, and the girl of his dreams, Evie. As summer turns to fall, Nico and Evie become ever more devoted to each other, to their work as young actors, and to the community of the theatre. But then ugly rumors begin to circulate that threaten the first feeling of family Nico has ever had. Battling with the desire to defend his new home and his impulse to protect Evie, Nico makes a fateful choice. Many years later, Nico and Evie are leading lives far different from the ones they envisioned as children.
