Play for today: a history of a democratic television drama

By May, Tom (College teacher)

First published 2027

"This book will be based on the research completed for the author's PhD thesis, 'A History and Interpretive Analysis of Play for Today (BBC1, 1970-84)', but is to be entirely rewritten and significantly condensed in order to take the book's intended readership into account. The book will also take into account new developments in studies of PfT since the PhD's final completion in January 2023, while Chapter 8 investigates TV single dramas that have been newly screened from January 2023 - January 2025. The thesis is publicly available, as Louise North of the BBC Written Archives Centre provided approval and final input regarding the citation of BBC WAC materials on 10 August 2023. The thesis has been placed online via Northumbria's online repository in late August 2023, under the author's name Thomas William May, rather than Tom May. Katie Crosson, who has also been working on a PhD thesis considering PfT at Royal Holloway, is focusing more on its position in public memory, and analysing distinct and original aspects of PfT concerning joy and sentimentality. Thomas has communicated with Katie regularly over the last few years and their work is complementary"-- Provided by publisher.
