Chip and Agnes Hailstone catch fish for currency in bartering for supplies, and Andy and Kate Bassich use their pack of sled dogs for transportation.

    Spring has sprung for our four Alaskan households living miles from the nearest road network in different corners of this merciless territory. After the harsh winter, breakup is under way in remote Alaska and Life Below Zero's hardy characters face a whole new set of challenges.

    In the weeks just before freeze up, our four households are focused on last ditch efforts to bring in enough meat and supplies to enable them to make it through winter. But hungry grizzly bears and unpredictable weather pose a constant threat – and soon bone-chilling cold will add to their minute-by-minute test of survival. Among the many adventures featured in this series, Chip and his family embark on long treks in the blistering cold of the Arctic in their search for remote new hunting grounds, Sue navigates a new all-terrain vehicle back to her remote outpost home across 100 miles of desolate tundra in the dark and -50F temperatures, while Andy and Kate take on the task of teaching a newcomer how to survive life off the grid.

    With temperatures rising across Alaska, Sue must battle the elements to keep her camp running in the face of threats from waking predators. In Eagle, break-up on the Yukon River marks the most arduous time of the year, with Andy and Kate spending every hour building and preparing for the oncoming freeze. The Hailstones venture to a new summer camping ground with plans to teach their girls how to stock fresh fish, meat, and other resources while the land is plentiful. With a small window for their subsistence hunting, Erik and his new wife set out to harvest fresh spring meat. As the waterways thaw, Glenn must test his building skills in order to access nearby hunting areas in search of available food sources.

    The icy adventures continue for Life Below Zero's hardy characters as they race to prepare for their survival as the oncoming winter freeze begins to take hold in Alaska. With temperatures plummeting and limited daylight, it's a battle to secure the last of available resources.

    When spring arrives in Alaska, the thaw means it’s time to begin preparing for the next freeze, by hunting, fishing or relocating for the summer. The Hailstones and Jessie work on projects to take advantage of the summer bounty. Glenn searches for a long lost cabin, and Sue reopens her camp.

    An early winter strikes across Alaska, with temperatures plummeting and snow closing in. Each one of our characters must pursue their last chance to gather, hunt, fish, and build before the land freezes around them. As dark winter arrives, these bush dwellers fight to prepare for months of extreme isolation where they must rely only on themselves to survive.

    In remote Alaska live the hardy characters who make their homes in one of the toughest areas of the world. In this season we follow their lives through the summer thaw as they race against the clock to prepare for the next dark winter freeze.
