Jack's BackWhen Guthrie is fatally stabbed in an alleyway, Murphy cancels his holiday to investigate. She was working undercover in the case of three murders of homeless women. Murphy in turn poses as a homeless man to find what the press is calling the return of Jack the Ripper. He takes up residence in a homeless shelter and befriends a teenaged refugee who may have witnessed one of the killings. He also has his eye on resident counsellor and religious advisor, Reverend William Norris.
Bent Moon on the RiseMurphy is assigned to a drug squad headed by Nic Winters after one of Winters' team, Aaron Parmer, commits suicide. There is a concern that race may have played a part. Soon after joining, Murphy concludes that racism isn't the problem: he suspects Winters of skimming some of the seized drugs. It becomes apparent that the entire squad is on the take and when a second DC is killed, Murphy begins to wonder to what extent Parmer's death was genuinely suicide.
RingersMurphy finds himself going undercover with INTERPOL to smash a car smuggling ring run by Godfrey Raines with his son and daughter. Murphy manages to convince Raines that he too is a car thief specialising in high-end vehicles. He soon realizes that INTERPOL is after something else when they delay arresting Raines and start questioning about arms shipments. Into the picture comes former MI6–turned–criminal Mr Davidson.
Go Ask AliceMurphy goes undercover at a defence biotech contractor that may be covering up an industrial accident. Specifically, a young child is found to have drowned but the mother believes he died as a result of a chemical agent in the pond near where the child was playing. Despite being warned off the case, the police leave Murphy in place. When the family who helped the dead boy and his mother is executed, it becomes apparent that someone will stop at nothing to keep these secrets hidden.
ConventMurphy goes undercover in a convent when a young nun apparently commits suicide and a second vanishes. Posing as a priest, he finds any number of suspects. The older nuns obviously have a secret and are in league with a pharmaceutical firm. Murphy suspects they may be participating in illegal or unauthorised drug trials in their African mission.
The GroupMurphy finds himself before a disciplinary review board after having shot a suspect during an arrest and soon out of the force completely. He approaches psychologist Mark Maddison, who runs a support group for individuals who have have lost someone to violent crimes. In fact, Murphy is undercover as at least three suspects have been killed and all had some connection to a member of the group. However, Murphy's loyalties are torn when they provide him with the identity of the man who killed his daughter years earlier.
