National Geographic 100 YearsSeason 11982 · 100 episodesEpisodes1Egypt: Quest for EternityTake a spectacular journey to walk among the ancient ruins of one of history's great civilizations. Join Egyptologists as they unravel and interpret the riddles of Egypt's intriguing past.2Born of FireNational Geographic's cameras travel to Iceland, Africa, Japan, California and Greece to record how the huge plates of the earth's crust crash together, pull apart and override each other, causing ground-shattering earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Follow scientists around the world as they search for clues to the causes of these powerful geologic events. BORN OF FIRE demonstrates that while man is capable of harnessing this tremendous power for his benefit, he must also prepare for the possibility of cataclysmic disaster3Rain ForestThe tropical rain forests of the world are home to nearly half the animal species on earth - an estimated five million different life forms. More than 100 inches of rainfall each year sustain this lush environment, where some of the most fascinating examples of natural adaptation can be found. Journey to the dense rain forests of Costa Rica and watch as leaf-cutting ants carry sections of leaves many times their weight to underground fungus gardens, a basilisk lizard walks on water, and howler monkeys bask in the sun. Fascinating and thought-provoking, this film is an eloquent warning of the natural wonders we stand to lose on a world scale if human encroachment of the world's rain forests continues.4Among the Wild ChimpanzeesIn 1960 Jane Goodall set out for Tanzania's remote Gombe Stream Game Reserve to study the behavior of man's closest living relative, the chimpanzee. With dedication and perseverance she earned the trust of a wild chimp community, and gradually they revealed their individual personalities and the rich tapestry of their daily life. This program looks at two landmark decades of Jane Goodall's work, including her dramatic discovery of chimpanzees making and using tools.5Return to Everest6The Invisible WorldEach moment events take place that the human eye cannot perceive because these occurrences are too small, too large, too fast, too slow, or beyond the spectrum of visible light. During one harsh season, a punishing drought draws some of Africa's most magnificent creatures to the shrinking pools of the Luvuvhu River. Its dwindling waters provide relief for baboons, impala, elephants, lions, water birds and bee-eaters - but also a refuge for scores of hungry crocodiles. Amidst the stunning scenes of nature at its harshest, strange things happen. A baby crocodile basks on top of a hippopotamus. Baboons attack a crocodile that has taken a youngster from the troop. Crocodiles harass a heron and steal its hard-won catch. And hippos calmly wade into the middle of a crocodile feeding frenzy. But the power of nature and her relentless drought may prove greater than even that of the most fearsome beasts. This cruel season may turn out to be the LAST FEAST OF THE CROCODILES.
